Jerry Jones has a massive decision to make this offseason.

Fortunately he will have plenty of extra time to make it with the Dallas Cowboys' faint playoff hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads.

The Cowboys head into Sunday's clash with the Carolina Panthers at 5-8 and without starting quarterback Dak Prescott after a disastrous season.

Jones clearly believed he had assembled a Super Bowl contender and claimed he was "all-in" in the final year of head coach Mike McCarthy's contract.

The team's failings would normally see a new man take the helm, but Jones has suggested an extension is on the cards.

"Well, let me just say this quickly, and Mike is an outstanding coach," the 82-year-old mogul said after a brutal Monday Night Football loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. "He has an outstanding record. He's got great experience.

"A lot of what he's about, some of the benefits that we're having out there, we're gaining from the type coach that he is. And so there's an old adage, when you start thinking about any coaches, you better give it a good look, because he's one of the most outstanding.

"So again, I've spoken to that about any consideration I'm having, but this was a hard one for him tonight [Monday]. I'm sure."

The Cowboys had victory in their grasp but fumble🍌d - literally and figurative♛ly - after a special teams error following a blocked punt.

It gave Joe Burrow a chance and the Bengals quarterback took it with both🌞 ꧒hands in a 27-20 triumph.

Still, Jones' comments should make positive reading for McCarthy.

Unfortunately, we've been here before.

"Jason Garrett's a good coach, let's start right there," Jones said of McCarthy's predecessor. "He's one of the smartest coaches and one of the hardest-working coaches.

"He knows this team better than anybody. When I, this year, decided to go with a younger makeup of the coaching ♑staff, I felt strongly that we could go and do that (and) he could be the safety net.

"I'm glad to have him. He is the guy for the job."

Just 35 days later McCarthy was in Garrett's chair.

The incumbent does have s🉐ome things going in his favor.

NFL Network insider to discuss the position.

"Does Jerry Jones bring Mike McCarthy back? I don't think that is his first option," Wyche said. "If he does, I think that's maybe because some other things he tries fall through.

"Let's not forget, Mike McCarthy won 12 games for three consecutive years. He just didn't all of a sudden forget how to coach."

The Cowboys are the world's first $10billion sports franchise and Jones is not your typical owner.

"He knows how this organization functions, which is different from other teams," added Wyche of McCarthy. "You've got Jerry Jones doing press conferences, post-game in locker rooms. You don't see that from an owner with any other team.

"Mike McCarthy's kind of ready for that. He's dealt with that. He understands the dynamic.
